how does she do that… I met Julia Rothman a few years ago when she came to Dallas to judge our regional graphic design show. She struck me right away as this young, incredibly talented, down-to-earth person. Since then I have watched Julia’s career soar. I adore everything she makes. She is an exceedingly brilliant pattern maker and as a designer, I envy people who can think like that. The ability to repeat a pattern is tricky, and the intricacy of her patterns is incredible.

Julia’s style feels so genuine and charming. Her work is decidedly graphic but not at all cold, and there is almost a whimsical twist to her hand done lineart and illustration that brings charm to all things Julia.

Her work has been commissioned by several notable retailers, just to name a few: Hello Lucky, Urban Outfitters, Garnet Hill and Land of Nod. Julia has designed everything from paper products like wallpaper and cards to children’s toys and desk accessories. I find all of her work to be entertaining and fresh. I’m always pleasantly surprised at what she has come up with.

Julia was one of five artists who participated in Design by the Book which was a video series with design*sponge and the New York Public Library. Check out the final episode here. You can visit YouTube or design*sponge and see all of the episodes. Also check out Grace Bonney’s exclusive interview with Julia here.
Her amazing blog, Book By It’s Cover is all about books that you should definitely add to your daily creative intake. Julia also partners with two designers in Chicago to make up a three person design company called Also-Online. It’s an incredible website…definitely check it out.
