I’ll be honest, I am pretty darn picky… when it comes to letterpress but Jason McDaniel of MissingQPress might be even pickier. His passion for the craft is overwhelmingly apparent. Over the years he has acquired multiple presses, to be truthful, I’m not sure how many at this point. He began as a curious hobbyist and has blossomed into a full blown incredible stationer. In the past couple of years, he has created a substantial line of greeting cards for MissingQ that are available at chic boutiques like Stella Dallas, Paper & Chocolate and Avante Garden.

I thought it would be fun to show a little of his impressive work and around the MissingQPress studio. Jason’s got great taste in interiors and is able to mix mod with antique (both in decor and in his letterpress design) and you will see that successfully pulled off throughout. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to use this white, shiny oval dining room table from IKEA as a desk or conference table… just think it’s fabulous. The studio is filled with pops of orange throughout and it feels so creative. He’s got lots of envelopes, stickers and paper products from various projects that are fun to peruse.

I love how this series of photos below shows how both technical yet hand-done letterpress is. If you’re unfamiliar with letterpress printing, it is one of the oldest forms of printing. You can read the official Wikipedia page here but essentially letterpress is a form of crash printing. Traditionally letterpress was often described as “kissing the paper” meaning just a light touch of paper to plate. However, in recent years the trend is to smash the plate as hard as you can into a soft thick paper for a deep impression. Old school letterpress folks will tell you this is wrong but I’m totally fine with that. When done well, it is drop-dead gorgeous. I’m a total sucker for really good “breaking the rules” letterpress.

Jason has recently learned to tip edges!!! His cards are tipped in yellow below and then in this series of wedding invitations the edges are tipped a rich chocolate brown. I have yet to take advantage of this new talent but I’m dying to soon. What a handsome way to add a pop of color.

Below are a few of my favorite greeting cards from MissingQ…who doesn’t love skulls and cupcakes??

You two will stop at nothing to see me seething with envy! Will you? Kids, Texas must be doin’ somethin’ right with all y’all’s stylishness! Damn.
Can’t wait to meet up! (Um, Sam, no…there’s no plan. I’m pretty easy, it’ll all be good.) You know it’s gonna be getting up into the 90’s+? Welcome to the Pacific Northwest, Kids! Glad you could “beat the heat”! I dedicated today’s first post to ya’s. :)
My favorite letterpress shop in town. Everything I’ve seen from Jason is exactly as Sam said… gorgeous. You can’t NOT appreciate the tactile quality and effortless grace this stuff exudes. Kudos!
Love, love, love it!
PS: Also digging the Sprinkles!
Thanks for sharing Jason’s beautiful work with us, Sam! I’m truly impressed. It’s simply gorgeous!!!
Happy Friday! xoxo Crystal
Yes, I too am a Jason McDaniel fan. His work and crafstmanship is so incredibly delicious to touch and see. Everytime I go to his studio I just want to pick up every little piece of paper and have a visual feast. It’s like being in a candy shop. L-O-V-E his style! Super talented individual and fun to hang around with too ;)
Jason is one of those rare individuals that not only has style - he also has substance. Everything he touches turns to letterpress gold, and his attention to detail is like none other I’ve seen. If I ever get married again.. better yet when my company has an event to remember Jason will be the first person I call.
I am definitely Jason’s biggest fan and supporter. I am certain that we will be life long friends in search of peely paint and paper products well into our 80’s! Great article on Jason - i love it as usual.
