it’s as serious as it looks… and twice as delicious. You just thought you needed a nap after Thanksgiving dinner but you clearly haven’t experienced Chris Madrid’s. I revisited this San Antonio institution on a trip to the hill country recently and felt that it was a must to swoon over. If you’re not familiar with the mouthwatering establishment, this is the home to the traditional bean burger which means refried beans, cheddar cheese, tortilla chips all on top of a huge beef patty (I added fresh jalapeños for a little extra kick — you could say I like things a tad spicy).

One of the many great things about San Antonio is that everything is always true Fiesta style, festive and colorful. Mexican paper flower wreaths, streamers and pinatas are hung throughout the restaurant. Upon entry, you can count on the fact that there’s always a line and it’s not fancy so leave your prom dress at home. Grab a number, your favorite homemade salsa and good luck finding a table, it’s packed. The service is “come and get it when it’s ready”. Cold beer, burgers, a patio and lots of calories = good combo.

It’s a genuine legend and I promise you won’t leave hungry or disappointed. If you really think you’re hot stuff then you should go for the macho but don’t say I didn’t warn you, which will undoubtedly involve minor suffering and a definite nap time if you attempt to take down the magnificence of this mammoth burger. Enjoy!

Ahh… one of my all time favorites. Only in south Texas can I find the elusive bean burger… and I’m not talking about the wussy vegetarian type :)
mmmmm….. Chris Madrids. LOVE me a bean burger!
yum. yum.
Looks so tasty and fiesta lovely! Jalapeños? Bring ‘em! I like me some spice too. “Wussy vegetarian”, Bret? Careful now we got scads of ‘em in the Pacific Northwest. Which is why I say we meet up at Chris Madrids! :)
