throw your hands in the air

i’m a big fan… of David Simcik’s work. You might remember it from my Grange Hall post, dark and bizarre but somehow charming and definitely interesting. I recently went to visit the intriguing artist’s home and studio.

note: You can look forward to a very cool and mind-boggling post about his studio soon.

When David and I first spoke about meeting to photograph the house he said “most people are surprised when they meet me I’m not the person you would expect to create the strange art I do.” Even though I knew that, I was still pretty shocked when I met David. He has this wonderful calming manner about him, the kindest heart and tons of interesting stories.

The house is surprisingly modern, bright and filled with natural light. It is packed with incredible art from all over but quite a bit from Santa Fe, one of David’s favorite places to visit (it’s one of mine too!). We talked a lot about galleries in Santa Fe. Bret and I are headed there in a few weeks and I’m so excited.

David is somewhat of a collector…you may have picked that up from looking at his art. He collects rocks, corals, doll heads, metal pieces and then either pulls them together in an interesting way in his art or displays them very scientifically like little masterpieces as in these two pharmacy looking cases.

David is my brother and he has always been an artist and a great inspiration and support to me. His art may be kind of “Tim Burtonish”, but with a great, unique style all his own. He has always been innovative in his art form. He is one of the kindest, warmest most caring people I know. I keep telling him that one day he will be famous for the uniqueness and quality of his work. I am so proud of him. David I love you. E
