night night

myroom

oh how I love sleep… I’m in NY and wanted to share pics of my hotel. NIGHT. It’s sort of goth-like which sounds bizarre, and kind of is really, but if you don’t mind lack of color (and we all know I don’t) then it’s very cool. I love all of the texture in the interior and the clever uses of materials to break up the monotony. There’s nothing boring about the salt and pepper/good and evil/ebony and ivory color palette. When I was reading reviews online someone said “It’s a nice hotel but it’s dark” uh, hello…the name of the hotel is NIGHT? It’s a boutique so it’s small…kind of reminds me of my hotel in Belgium, except well, instead of all white…all black!

Check out pics and more details about the hotel…

honduras threads

stack

i am in awe… I was first introduced to these beautiful pillows by the very talented artist Pamela Nelson this summer. Honduras Threads is a non profit organization started by M’Lou Bancroft that supports the work of women’s embroidery cooperatives in rural Honduran villages. I am a big fan of microfinancing programs for women in poverty and this one has truly made an impact. The project started as part of a Mission trip and what began as one coop has grown to six.

Each pillow is truly a work of art. Today is a rare sale with over a thousand different handmade pillows to choose from. The pillow designs are the work of artist Pamela Nelson and design Barbara Velhum. The Honduran women bring their own artistry to the designs with their choices of color, fabric selections and embroidery stitches. It’s fascinating to look at how one design has been interpreted in so many ways…

don’t’ miss it! today!!! I think this is a lovely Christmas gift that you can feel good about giving. Pillows ranging from $50 to $95 and then table runners about $150.
Open House and Shopping Spree on Thursday, Dec. 10 from 10 am to 4 pm at Chapel of the Cross, 4333 Cole Ave., Dallas.

with love from Paris

boarding-pass-sam-1

fun!! Just a quick note to say thank you and send my love to blogger Anne Ditmayer of prêt à voyager. She asked me a couple of weeks ago if she could feature me as a BOARDING PASS on her incredible travel blog. I’m not much of a world traveler and pale in comparison to most of her other previous BP guests but I am honored to be a part of the group! I envy Anne’s life…she is a fellow graphic designer and just moved from Baltimore to Paris where she is working on her master’s degree in global communications at the American Institute of Paris. OH! And this lovely lady writes sneak peeks for Design Sponge. LUCKY.

downtown delight

home21

books, books, and more books… I love the anticipation that builds every year as we wait for the windows to be revealed at the original flagship store of Neiman Marcus on Main Street downtown. It’s a big to do. People come from all over the city with their hot chocolate and scarves to stand in the streets and their eyes sparkle as the NM Christmas tree is unveiled (it almost always seems to turn cold just in time). This year in particular was a real spectacle with a twist. It’s all about innovation and you can read all the details below. It’s a massive effort of book collecting which is just spectacular but the coolest part is that children (under a certain height) can crawl through the windows!! Their parents watch on monitors called kid-camz disguised as lab monitors. Every inch of it is cool from the moment you are greeted by the gal in the lab coat with the huge round black glasses…
