don’t let the name fool you… because if you like roughin’ it, this ain’t for you my friend. I mentioned that we spent our wedding night at Rough Creek Lodge and that I would follow up with additional info — there’s so much more to tell. Rough Creek is lux, rustic lodge about a two hour drive of hill country scenery from Dallas near Glen Rose.

It’s Texas. So embrace it and work with what you’ve got. Driving in you’ll see the “armadillo crossing” signs, buffalo and steers among acres and acres of beautiful Texas terrain. Your blood pressure should start to go down now if it hasn’t already. You’ll arrive to a find an architecturally significant structure with a wood burning fire and fresh water or coffee (depending on the weather) and helpful valets to get you on your way to relax. Deep breathe. Time to unwind.

Rough Creek is critically acclaimed for it’s ridiculously fab food…keep reading. Before our lunch I snuck out back into the chef Gerard Thompson’s garden. It was full of fresh herbs which was kind of fun to sneak a peek. I loved all of the little handwritten labels in each pot of greenery.

Oh I sure hope you’ll find something to eat……….or drink.
House made potatoes, deeeelicious bloody mary, hand cut fries, juicy burger and pizza…that was just lunch. Dinner was full on rustic style fine dining with all kinds of game like pheasant, quail and elk. Meat, meat and more meat so save up your red meat moment for the evening. Brunch. That was my fav. Unbelievable. A buffet overflowing with omelets, waffles, french toast, bacon, house made pork sausage… mouth. watering.

And what to do?!!! Well…. there’s a full list of 79 things here. A short snippet is spa, pools, tennis, hot tubs, rock climbing, smores, four wheeling, nature trails, fishing, hunting, clay shooting, horseback riding, zip lining, biking, bungee trampoline, nap in a hammock anyone?

Last little note: The thing about Rough Creek is that it’s a sticker shock but honestly what you get for what you shell out is worth every penny. It’s a package per person and food is included. I think that’s a hard thing for people to get past but if you can figure the cost of going to two fine dining meals and staying at a five star hotel I think it all shakes out in the end.

Wow!! Just fabulous in every way. I’m so happy that you two got to go there! Great memories………..
Love the individual cabins (screened-in porches, hammocks outside) and the wedding chapel they built several years ago. Nice pics.
i want to go to there.
