ooooooh fun… I’ll tell you we had a blast. This is a relatively quick detailed look at a living and dining room we’ve just completed my friend and client Amy Phillips. It was the first interior endeavor for SWOON, the studio and it was tons of fun. Amy and I have known each other and worked together for several years. When she and I first talked about her house she stressed how important it was that it was modern and not cluttered (at all!!) but super comfortable and livable. That’s more of a challenge than you might realize. It’s one thing to make it look pretty but comfy? We tested out cozy perfection from sofas to dining chairs and kept it all pretty darn reasonable - which is so important to me. I love a good deal. She was happy and so was I. Bask in the glow of comfortable luxury.

The thing about Amy’s house is that it’s filled with her grandmother’s art. BUT this is not your typical grandmama. Don’t think still life flowers and vintage paint by numbers, think Miro, Picasso, and Matisse (and these are only a few, seriously). Stunning. Interesting. Jaw-dropping. Art that most of us only get to wish for and I was thrilled to use it as a launching point. When we first started we had new art, mixed with these masters and they weren’t used as focal points but quickly we changed them to the coveted heros of the house.

The Matisse set the tone for the wall paint. Amy was a little timid to commit to a color but I talked her off the ledge and got her to buy off on gray. We pulled up the fireplace brick and replaced it with marble matchstick mosaic tile. The charcoal color of the wall was perfect hue to pop the fireplace, the artwork and pull out the colors of the room in the new tile.

There are two adorable and active twins in this home we had to also consider . How to make it very inhabitable for a six year old boy and girl but live up to their mama’s chic and fab taste. I’m in LOVE with this chaise lounge from Weirs if you can believe it! We found the same one at Wisteria but discovered it at Weirs for half the price!

So about the lights. CB2 happiness. Firefly pendant lamp. This is a set of two and really transformed everything. The lights added the perfect amount of glam and mod.

These chairs are also from Weir’s… we are in love with them. They are so petit and precious with lots of character (and they were a STEAL!!). The pairing with the acrylic nesting tables (also from CB2) was pretty fantastic. Amy shares my love of acrylic :)

These make me laugh even now… She has TONS of Readers Digest books and they were the one thing she told me NOT to use BUT I couldn’t help it. I filled a few shelves in the built ins with them and they added great texture and a little color. Bookshelves are tough because they can get junky with too much “stuff.” I love to fill them with lots of the same thing like wood or books. My new thing is paper back books without the covers. I love the simple texture it adds without the clutter.

Ahhh…jealous? I know. Me too.

love! this post makes me want to go home right now and redo everything
Awesome job!! Love it.
So, so many things I love! I cannot believe those pieces are from Weir’s! Genius use of the CB2 lights. I may have to snag a few to put above a tulip table in the corner of my den that is in great need of light. Lovely choice of grey for the wall. Such a great job of making it feel warm and inviting! Congrats on an amazing job from a new blogger in Dallas! Love your inspiration!
Love the lights!
Jealous? Really jealous?!! Hardly! Oh, Sam, Sam, Sam! Why would I be jealous of all this when I’m on the cutting edge of design with my own home?!! Popcorn ceilings, orange peel walls, a dining room that carries a ruby red reminiscent of the early 90’s, and beige wall-to-wall? I KNOW! I like livin’ the glamorous like! Ugh!
Jealous? Okay, maybe. I’ll let you know after I stop my envious crying. ;)
Love, love, love this! I am so glad you are venturing into interiors. I am head over heels in love with the paintings and lights. So amazing!
Oh wow!!! So livable yet chic at the same time - I love it!! And goodness, I cannot fathom having such an art collection - great job highlighting them throughout the space.
I love it all! Would you mind sharing what color gray you used? I recently repainted our living room gray but it is too light. I’m having a hard time finding a true gray that is not too light or too dark - but I love the shade you’ve used here.
Kelly - Let me check on that for you and I will let you know!
Love those lights! Gorgeous!
it’d say your first endeavor was a success! i can.not believe those lights are from cb2!
Well - I have to say, I am the proud (not just proud, but VERY PROUD) owner of this magnificent makeover. Never in a million years did I expect two rooms to be transformed into the most contemporary, modern, yet warm and cozy, livable space. And I have Sam to thank for it all. She took my uncluttered vision and created the most gorgeous canvas. It truly is a masterpiece and I absolutely LOVE it. It was not everything I wanted - it was MORE. Talk about exceeding someone’s expectations. YISH! Sam - there is only one you in this beautiful world….. And you make our world a more beautiful place to live. xoxoxooxo A, J, and G.
we’ve seen Amy’s home first hand and it looks absolutely fabulous, bright and cheerful, every detail was given the utmost consideration, the colors are warm and inviting, the ceiling fixtures add a feeling of elegance and set the mood, the decor has captured just the contemporary feeling Amy was looking for. If I did not know differently, it could be any 5th Avenue penthouse. Most important is the love that exudes from within her home.
I LOVE it! The best thing about Amy’s transformed house is that is is magnificently designed yet functional and practical (having kids). That is a challenge. It looks amazing. Job Well DONE!
This is so beautiful I can’t stand it. So warm, chic, crisp and clean and inviting. It’s just gorgeous - what a beautiful job you did! I am positively drooling over the two tufted chairs from Weirs (with the acrylic nestic tables b/w them) - but when I went to the Weirs site, it just listed their vendors. Do you know who which they’re from? (Lee, Bernhardt, etc?) Many thanks, and please post more of your work again soon!! Best, Stephanie
