I know it’s kinda crazy… but kinda lovely. Yes? A friend of mine from college is involved with the JLD Spring Fashion Show Rock the Runway and asked me to “rethink” a tote bag as a part of the silent auction. They gave out several totes, very simple, canvas roughly 10 x 12 ish and we could do whatever we wanted. Thought I would share my solution (it was due today…well, last week really!). It’s made of mostly of one of my favorite materials - CHEESECLOTH - (I know, I hear ya…it’s a showpiece people). I really wanted to change the shape of the bag but then still allow the bag itself to be peek out a little. I think it’s light, happy and hip. I could totally see it on the runway with an all white outfit. Final size was about 18 inches wide and 36 inches tall I think… more pics below of my little DIY.

I love the look of torn and frayed edges paired with layers. I knew I was going to do white (of course) but wasn’t sure how it would turn out… really happy with the final outcome. It feels summery, soft, very feminine but a little nautical with the rope handle I introduced after removing the original handles. Hopefully someone like-minded will see it through my eyes… I don’t think it’s for everyone! I think if I kept it I would just hang it somewhere cool in my house. Like a sculpture.

I REALLY don’t like having my photo taken but I wanted to give you scale. It’s a big handbag - which is a must in my book.

To give it some glam and some weight, I tied on one of my favorite, super heavy, milky chandelier crystals I got at an estate sale this summer. Each one is beautiful and about 2″ x 3″ and I rarely part with them but this one was special.

Love the way the light passes through the layers of the bag…

Lovely, looks like you are carrying a cloud!
Sam, you have outdone yourself as always!! Thank you so much for being a part of our event- what a showstopping piece!!
So dreamy - I could definitely see it floating down the runway! Amazing job!

I can see the next happening: “A Walk In The Clouds”… an installation by Samantha Reitmayer
the outstanding artist presenting her new collection of handbags :0)
You are so talented!!
Your bag is so cool. I love it.
I transformed a bag for the event as well. I didn’t go to the event, did you? I wonder how it all went, especially the bags, I’d loved to have seen them all together.
Here’s a link to my bag: http://pattihaskins.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/custom-designed-tote/
it makes no sense! ….. which is why I can’t resist it …… wonderful.
Just wanted to follow up - the bag was a HUGE hit of course. I got to deliver it to the winner and it was so much fun to see the excitement on her face. It went to a great home! Thank you Sam - with your generous help we were able to raise over $35,000!!
